In Keith Harrel’s book, ‘Attitude is everything’, he discussed a story of a young man in his teen age from Ghana, a country in West Africa, the young lad purposely left home for abroad in order to make a difference to his life and by so doing to impact more lives afterwards. After six years, he returned and his people were anxiously inquisitive over what could be the difference he brought from abroad, he calmly and slowly brought from his inner suit pocket ‘three seeds’ he ordered them to plant each on different locations, and each of the seeds grown to a matured Cocoa tree, in a nut shell, Ghana is one of the leading country that produces Cocoa in the planet Earth.
This is the legacy that could last till eternity, imagine the position you are holding, do you see it as temporary or a permanent sphere that nothing can excuse you from leaving it, recall, if you fail to lay a legacy that worth following, your name will be spontaneously eroded from the top of the sand.
How much do you get disturbed about your career, status, age, race, background that you cannot make a difference or create a legacy that worth emulating.
let me discuss in a jiffy the impact of Rashidi Yekini.
The greatest football Striker the Nigerian senior football team has ever had. He worked so hard to put Nigerian football on the map. He never rejected National call ups, he never discriminated against any National team player. He played every match he was invited for, and with any group of players. Yekini single handedly qualified us for our first world cup. He brought joy to the hearts of many Nigerians and succour to us during many trying moments.
Yekini scored our first world cup goal, he won a Nations cup for us. Before then he won 3 Nations cup silver and one bronze for us. Oh, the Yekingly, the goals-father who won highest goal scorer in the Nigerian league 3 times, in Ivory Coast, in Portugal. He scored goals for Nigeria at the Nations Cup in 84, 88, scored highest goals in 90,92 and 94. What a player, what a man (Noah, 2015).
No matter how successful you are, the accolades and awards you banged if your impact in the lives of others is nothing to be remembered of, then, you are a failure.
Some online write-ups had discussed on the last speech of Steve Jobs, although, no concrete evidence that could buttress the genuineness of the speech, but the most important thing is the message that is being passed.
“I reached the pinnacle of success in the business world. In others’ eyes, my life is an epitome of success. However, aside from work, I have little joy. In the end, wealth is only a fact of life that I am accustomed to.
At this moment, lying on the sick bed and recalling my whole life, I realize that all the recognition and wealth that I took so much pride in, have paled and become meaningless in the face of impending death. In the darkness, I look at the green lights from the life supporting machines and hear the humming mechanical sounds, I can feel the breath of god of death drawing closer …
Now I know, when we have accumulated sufficient wealth to last our lifetime, we should pursue other matters that are unrelated to wealth …
Should be something that is more important:
Perhaps relationships, perhaps art, perhaps a dream from younger days
Non-stop pursuing of wealth will only turn a person into a twisted being, just like me.
God gave us the senses to let us feel the love in everyone’s heart, not the illusions brought about by wealth. The wealth I have won in my life I cannot bring with me. What I can bring is only the memories precipitated by love. That’s the true riches which will follow you, accompany you, giving you strength and light to go on. Love can travel a thousand miles. Life has no limit. Go where you want to go. Reach the height you want to reach. It is all in your heart and in your hands.
What is the most expensive bed in the world? Sick bed …
You can employ someone to drive the car for you, make money for you but you cannot have someone to bear the sickness for you. Material things lost can be found. But there is one thing that can never be found when it is lost — Life.
When a person goes into the operating room, he will realize that there is one book that he has yet to finish reading — Book of Healthy Life.
Whichever stage in life we are at right now, with time, we will face the day when the curtain comes down. Treasure Love for your family, love for your spouse, love for your friends. Treat yourself well. Cherish others.”
Steve Jobs was a difference maker in the new world of technology, his company is one of the most successful companies of all time, he left the world the impact he planted on the soil of the Earth.
Every single one of us leaves a legacy. Your very existence has an impact on the world whether you intend it or not. So, how do you want to be remembered?
Ask yourself, “If I died today …”
- What would I want people to say about me?
- How have I helped other people?
- Have I done my best, given my all?
- Did my life have meaning and purpose?
Working towards a legacy in both your business and personal life keeps you motivated and performing at your peak. It gives a higher purpose to your life and work. Your work has an edge and energy because you’re no longer just “doing work,” you’re building a legacy. Above all, it helps you share the fullest of what you are. And that’s what I call Success!
